Uday Goteti’s artistic journey began in the most unexpected of places—his childhood school notebooks. Rather than filling them with words, young Uday adorned them with drawings, catching the attention of his teachers and parents, who soon recognized his innate artistic talent. This early start marked the beginning of a career that would merge creativity with purpose, as Uday went on to become not only an acclaimed artist but also an influential architect.
The essence of art, according to Uday, lies in its ability to create a new world. He believes that while art exists in everything, only a few possess the skill to bring it to life. For him, this is what sets artists apart, as their creations bring joy and inspiration to people. “The love and appreciation that people show for your art is what keeps the creative flow alive,” he says. Uday’s passion for creativity has propelled him forward, guiding his work and continuing to inspire him in every project he undertakes.
One of Uday’s proudest achievements came during his school days when he received a gold medal in painting at Kala Darshini, Vijayawada. The award was presented by Padmashree recipient Shri S.V. Rama Rao, a highly respected artist, under the presidency of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Uday recalls this moment as a milestone in his artistic career, one that validated his talent and encouraged him to pursue art more seriously.
Over time, Uday’s style evolved as he explored various creative fields. He dabbled in fashion designing, automobile engineering, and architecture, where he discovered how integral creativity was to solving design problems. Each of these experiences broadened his artistic perspective, allowing him to express himself in unique ways and refine his creative voice.
However, Uday’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. As an artist, he faced skepticism from society, where many held the belief that there was no future in art. “No matter how talented an artist might be, society often undervalues their work, imagining a life limited to street sketches or trivial jobs,” he shares. Determined to prove the worth of art on a global scale, Uday committed to showcasing its value through his profession.
His dedication bore fruit when his skills were recognized not only by the State Government but also by National and International bodies. Among his many achievements, Uday was selected to design the official logos for prestigious landmarks of Andhra Pradesh and crafted the conceptual design for the Shri Puri Jagannath Temple in Chicago, USA. He was also chosen to design the official logo of the statue of social justice in Vijayawada, which was approved by the Chief Minister and the state government. Uday also designed the G20 Vizag summit’s official backdrop poster and host logo, which was approved by the Chief Minister.
One of Uday’s most significant contributions has been to the Vijayawada Riverfront Park. This project began as an initiative to protect the city from floods, as the Krishna Varadhi area, once a major slum, faced severe damage during the rainy season. Collaborating with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and the Irrigation Department of Andhra Pradesh, Uday and his team constructed a retaining wall that safeguarded the local population.
However, Uday’s vision extended beyond mere functionality. Inspired by the Sabarmati Riverfront in Gujarat, he was chosen in 2022 to design a park that would not only enhance the city’s aesthetics but also elevate its health and wellness standards. Uday’s design for the Vijayawada Riverfront Park adhered to seven fundamental principles: Emphasis, Balance and Alignment, Contrast, Repetition, Proportion, Movement, and White Space.
He also created a striking central structure, the Lotus Plaza, inspired by the fluid beauty of a lotus flower. Today, this structure stands as one of the most iconic landmarks in both Vijayawada and Andhra Pradesh. Uday ensured that the park would serve as a hub for the community, integrating greenery, palm trees, and gym facilities to promote health and well-being.
